Located in south San Antonio, Mitchell Lake is a 1,200-acre site with a mixture of brushland, grassland, wetlands, ponds, and woodlands. The 600 acre lake is positioned on a natural migratory bird route, the Central Flyway, and serves as a resting point for tens of thousands of birds each year before finishing their migration north or south. Among the more than 300 species observed are American White Pelicans, Crested Caracara, Roseate Spoonbills, Hooded Merganser, and various other duck, shorebird, and warbler species. The property is managed by the National Audubon Society and includes over 7.5 miles of walking and driving trails winding through the various habitats. Bird-watchers come from all over the world to see the unique variety of birds that visit there. Check the website for hours and the calendar listing for monthly birding tours, and a year-round schedule of family programs, gardening workshops, and community events.
