Northwest/SeaWorld/Alamo Ranch

History/Cultural Significance

Much of the land on the northwest side of San Antonio along Loop 1604 between IH-10 and Highway 90 was once filled with cattle ranches and dairy farms. Today it is home to SeaWorld San Antonio and the Alamo Ranch residential community.

Key Area Highlights

Viola's Ventanas' beautiful Texas Hill Country restaurant sits on several acres on Westover Hills Blvd. Enjoy live music, a children’s play area and casero-style Mexican food made from family recipes. Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q on Westover Hills is a restaurant, gas station, garage and grocery store. Rudy’s is known for pits that are 100% wood fired with oak, a slower-burning wood than the commonly used mesquite.

Antlers Lodge at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa uses locally harvested ingredients and seasonal menus that feature traditional Texas fare with creative flair, including prime cuts, fish and game.
Two Step Restaurant & Cantina serves classic Texas cuisine and authentic margaritas. Enjoy live music Thursday through Sunday, and let the kids play in the large grassy area outside. Nearby is Tiu Steppi's Osteria, a neighborhood Italian restaurant serving homemade pizza, pasta, salads, antipasti, wine and craft beer. Bobby J's Old Fashioned Hamburgers in nearby Helotes is a casual, relaxing restaurant serving a wide variety of award-winning burgers, salads, chicken, seafood and vegetarian items. El Chaparral Mexican Restaurant has a longstanding reputation for dishes, such as enchiladas and bean soup, always made fresh daily.

Government Canyon State Natural Area features more than 40 miles of hiking and biking trails that range from remote rugged canyon lands to gently rolling grasslands. Outdoor activities include picnicking, hiking, biking, trail running, geocaching, regularly scheduled guided hikes, and ranger programs. The endangered golden-cheeked warbler can be found here in the spring. The Natural Area is home to the only known dinosaur footprints on public land in Bexar County. The 110-million-year-old tracks are believed to have been left by Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidon dinosaurs.

SeaWorld San Antonio offers hours of fun with roller coasters, rides, shows, tours, attractions and family-friendly activities. The park’s Pacific Point Preserve is an immersive experience where you can feed sea lions and seals in an area with the look and feel of a Pacific coast town. Make reservations for the sea lion interaction program, an in-water experience. New in 2016 is Discovery Point dolphin interaction offering underwater viewing as well as a swim with the dolphins program.

Aquatica San Antonio is SeaWorld’s waterpark, combining up-close animal experiences with rides and entertainment. Also in the area, the San Antonio Aquarium provides children and families access to exhibits that include jellyfish, sea horses, crocodilia, rare and colorful corals, sharks, stingrays and thousands of other species.

Located on the grounds of The Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa, The Hill Country Golf Club features a championship course designed by Arthur Hills. This beautiful, dramatic and balanced 27-hole facility is set on more than 200 acres with wide-ranging terrain. The Windflower Spa at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort offers services such as massages, body treatments and facials. The tranquil setting for this luxurious facility includes 300 acres of wildflowers and historic ranch land.

Main Event Entertainment West offers the “Eat.Bowl.Play.” experience in a 58,000-square-foot entertainment center with fun for everyone. The cutting-edge bowling experience includes black lights, fog and lasers, while multilevel laser tag provides a heart-pounding, music-filled adventure.

Alamo Ranch is a 950,000 sq. ft. shopping center on Loop 1604 between Culebra Road and Hwy. 151. This open-air mall has more than 90 stores, services and restaurants, and it will soon have a 16-screen movie theater as well.

Offbeat, unique or quirky finds:

You can’t find a more authentically Texas live music experience than that at the John T. Floore Country Store in Helotes, which opened in 1942 as a dance hall and café. Other top performers who have played here include Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Jerry Lee Lewis, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Dwight Yoakam, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, B.B. King, Little Richard and more.

Since 1929, the Grey Moss Inn Restaurant has offered a charming and romantic country setting for delicious Texas Hill Country cuisine in the small town of Grey Forest near Helotes. You’ll dine in a rustic stone building or out on the patio under a huge canopy of Texas Live Oak trees. Local legend has it that the restaurant is haunted.
